Built by Capt. William Ruddick and his son-in-law Samual Burks in about 1833. My ggg-grandfather and uncle built Elkhorn Tavern and grandpa sold the tavern to uncle Burks sometime later. The tavern was in the hands of various family members until the National Park Service bought it in 1964.
Elkhorn Tavern is located along an old Indian trail across the western slope of the Boston Mountains [Ozarks], along Pea Vine Ridge.
There was a pitch battle in the field in front of Elkhorn Tavern on Telegraph Road.
