Traditional

Scottish Wedding

The average white wedding will have up to three bridesmaids with a flower girl and kilted page boy usually about age three to seven. The task of the page boy is to present a lucky silver horseshoe to the bride as she steps out of the church on the arms of her husband. At many Scottish weddings a piper is on hand to lead the happy couple from the church to the waiting car. As the car moves away the groom may throw a pile of silver coins out the window to be gathered up by expectant children.

The average Scottish wedding begins at 4 PM. Since we do not have to many Scottish castles here in America. I recommend a outdoor setting, or perhaps an old mansion or public building such as a museum. My favorite is an outdoor setting within a grove of trees in a circle of stones [Celtic fashion].

The Reception

The wedding is followed by the reception with formal meal, champagne toast, and speeches at 5 PM and then the wedding dance at 7:30 PM until the wee small hours!

Wedding Gifts

Most modern couples have a show of wedding gifts at the reception, or a shower as we know it. Food and drinks being part of the affair, may turn this into quite a party. It is usually hosted by the bride to be and her mother.

Wedding Attire

Most brides prefer a white wedding dress. Favorite materials are still white satin and tulle embroidered with lace, although organza, beaded silk, cotton or taffeta is also used. The Victorian look is most popular.

Formal wear for the groom is either full Highland dress or day dress that is kilt and tweed jacket, or morning dress with gray topper and tails. Traditionally the groom, best man, and ushers wear white carnations and other male guests wear red ones. Lady guests may wear a buttonhole of carnations, orchids, or camellias to match their outfits. There are many places to rent full highland dress for weddings. We can help you find a place to rent your wedding attire if so chose.

Gaelic wedding blessing

Mi\le fa\ilte dhuit le d'bhre/id, Fad do re/ gun robh thu sla\n. Mo/ran la\ithean dhuit is si\th, Le d'mhaitheas is le d'ni\ bhi fa\s.

Translated as:

"A thousand welcomes to you with your marriage kerchief, may you be healthy all your days. May you be blessed with long life and peace, may you grow old with goodness, and with riches."

Many ask "Who pays for the Wedding?"

Many ask what does it cost for a Scottish wedding? They are expensive. Most of the arrangments and services are arranged for and paid for by ether the brides family or the grooms, as seperate services, unless you use the services of a wedding planner. The fee for the minister is seperate. It usually entails a fee and the groom may consider an "Honorarium" {Tip} to offset his fuel costs, meals, lodging, etc. Thank You.

Wedding Budget

Why Your Wedding Budget Planning is Important

Write down your wedding budget.

It is difficult to ask your parents if they are going to pay for your wedding or part of it, if so how much. You don't want to hurt their feelings but this must be done.

Well, even though this is a dreaded task, take it from me - You need to do this! Even if you know that you are paying for the wedding completely by yourselves, it is still important to write down your wedding budget.

Why?

There are several reasons why you should do this. The first is that it is important to get all of these issues out in the open right away. For instance, it is better to find out right away that your fiancé's parents have a friend who owns a flower shop and they are expecting you to order your flowers there, rather than hearing through the grapevine that they are going to pay for the flowers, ordering them from a shop that you like and then later finding out that the money was contingent upon ordering the flowers from this particular shop. If you are armed with knowledge, you are more capable of making decisions. Look at all your friends for sources of information and or services, but do not chose your friends just because they are your friends. Often you do not get the quality or service you want. Consider advice, but go with what you want.

Second, this will force you to plan from the very beginning what large expenses you are going to have in the coming months. This will give you a bigger-picture mentality and it will be easier for you to prepare for these expenses, and for your wedding in general.

Third, the act of writing down your budget is very important because it gives you something concrete to refer to. If you do not have a budget, I guarantee you will go over the amount you plan to spend/budget.
