With the renewed interest in early US and Civil War history, about eighteen years ago I re-activated the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles and all of it's companies and associated Ranger units. I am looking for, and accepting recruits into the unit. It is a Civil War Confederate dismounted cavalry unit, dedicated to the preservation of the memory, history, and honor of the American Indians of the Indian Territory who fought for the Trans-Mississippi West, Army of the Confederate States of America.

1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles - Regimental Color Guard - 2000 Veterans Day parade - Ponca City, Oklahoma
We consider the "Battle of Round Mountain, Yale, Oklahoma" our home re-enactment. I have been attending it since it was founded. This is an annual re-enactment, as opposed to many other events which are every three to four years. We re-enact in only those events that the original Mounted Rilfes faught in. Unless we get a special invitation to participate in an event [then we do this as a historical interpretation of an event]. We do not calvanize or participate in Gettysburg style Civil War re-enactment.
