ALFRED ANNISON SWAFFORD - my gg grandfather
NOTES:Chancery Court records in McMinn Co. and Madisonville from 1839 to 1841 reveal a complicated legal dispute which resulted from the sale of Andrew Bigham II's [(1760-1834) Revolutionary War Veteran] land by several heirs to James L. Senter, who died suddenly in 1839 after selling his interest in Andrew II's farm to Richard and Alfred Swafford. The legal problem resulted from the claim by Senter's heirs that the land had been deeded to them previously by their father. This Injunction Bill #153 prohibited those heirs from selling the tract of land until final resolution by the court. Andrew's exact date of death is uncertain, however the Court in McMinn Co. appointed Mr.John Camp as executor of his estate in early April of 1834. Andrew probably lies buried in an unmarked grave in the Richard Swafford cemetery on the farm he owned from 1823 to 1834 .

Alfred and Elizabeth "ran off" together from their McMinn Co., TN home. There were hints they lived for a time in Indiana but no one knew where. I recently discovered them in the 1870 census. William C. (William Columbus Cole) age 13 took on his stepfather's SWAFFAR surname; he appears in the 1880-1900-10-20 census.
NOTE: I suspect they took off shortly following the Civil War. This would be in keeping with my current research on the "House Divided," issue. You will note the name change. My g-grandfather Larkin Franklin Swafford spelled his name SWAFFAR as well [he also spelled it Swaffer according to the 1880 White Cty., AR. Census]. So did my grandfather James Monroe Swaffar and my mother Emma Neoma Swaffar. However I have photos of my uncle William Larkin Swaffar, that on the back of the photo has it spelled Swafford. I think it was in my grandmother's handwriting. I use the common spelling of Swafford most often because it appears to be the common North American spelling. Though my mother, my grandfather and g-grandfathers records show Swaffar, as does most of my g-grandfathers children and grandchildren.

NOTES on Larkin Franklin Swaffar's service record:
5TH MOUNTED INFANTRY REGIMENT, Company "A" [Union]
SWAFFAR, LARKIN F. Rank: Private
Age: 26
DOB: 1838
Enlisted: Oct 11 64
Mustered: Nov 24, 1864
Remarks: He sustained two bullet wounds; one to the back and one to the head. Was given laudenum for pain and mustered out. The death of his youngest child due to laudenum poison caused him to quit using the pain killer and he suffered with pain the rest of his life. He threw the bottle of laudenum away and never took any again. He lived to be 97 years and 3 months. The laudenum was in a green bottle. It came down through the years that no one should take medicine from a green bottle.
NOTES on SWAFFORD's during Indian land allotment: When the Indian Territory was broken-up during the Indian Land Allotment. Larkin and his son George Newton and his wife Anna drew allotment land.
