FORD FAMILY

Benton County, Arkansas

The

FORD

line not unlike the other surnames of our family are of Scotch-Irish which are Lowland Scots and Northumberlain Saxons who were re-located to Ulster Ireland [Viking] and Native American descent. One of the origins of the name is rooted in the sept names of the MacKinnane Clan. Current research indicates that the surname FORD was originaly pronounced and spelled variously as [FOARD, FORBES, FORDE, variants, with FORDEN being possibly the original spelling]. The surname FORD originated along the Scottish/English Border Ridings of Northumberland. The ancestral Castle was Chillingham Castle. This area was invaded and occupied by Danish Vikings in about 979ad.

I have just recieved some interesting new information from a cousin in Northumberland, who indicates that the FORD surname was possibly originally spelled FORDEN and is in fact associated with Chillingham Castle. That the name originates in the Netherlands [Norse].

Chillingham Castle

During the 19th century the Earl of Tankerville was the Liard of the Castle

Most of Scotch-Irish or Ulster-Scot names have their origins in the early forced removal of Scots into the Ulster District of Ireland. The early Celts occupied Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England before the invasion of of the Normans in 1066 [Irish and Scots - are terms used by the Romans for the Celts].

1st Generation

Descendents of George C. Ford [FORDE, FOARD, FORDEN]

George C. FORD, born abt. 1770 in Mecklenburg Cty., North Carolina, died abt. 1840-50 Benton Cty., Arkansas and is buried in the Ford Cemetery inside the Pea Ridge National Battlefield. He was married to [unk] Winchester

Notes on George C. FORD: not unlike his neighbors of the period; though a farmer, there was little need to farm with the abundance of game in the Ozark Mountains of northwestern Arkansas. According to the 1820 and 1830 Warren Cty., census' George and his brother Henry and families are listed. Looking at the birth locations of Richard's children, he arrived here in early 1833.

There is some speculation that George's parent's was Henry Ford and Catherine [unk]. George and his brother Henry were born in Mecklenburg Cty., NC.

NOTE: Estate recorded in Benton County, Arkansas April 15, 1867 for Richard Ford. It lists his heirs as: Rebecca Caroline [?], nee: Sawyer, Mary "Polly" Ruddick, nee: Ford, Nancy Jane Ford, nee: Marshall, Ivan Ford, George Winchester Ford, and is signed by John Henry Ford.

Strangly Jefferson Tilton Ford is not mentioned in the will nor the estate; he was Richards son and Mary "Polly" Ruddick's husband. He did not pass away until 1882 in Benton County???????. SpeculationI think my gg-grandfather divorced his wife, Mary "Polly" Ruddick [my gg-grandmother] and took up with Roberta Virginia Howett??? Thus it appears he was estranged from his father and his father-in-law Capt. William Ruddick.

I think this probable angered my ggg-grandfather Richard Ford and to insure the estate for his grandson; William Franklin Ford. He left a share of the estate to his daughter-in-law; Mary "Polly" Ruddick. The ironic part of the story is that after the death of Mary "Polly" Ruddick [Ford], and William Franklin Ford's relocation to the Indian Territory, Robert Virginia Howett is living with him and his family in the Indian Territory, until her death.
