Built 1823 - 1824 SWEENEY log home - from "Historical Notes of Appomattox County, Virginia," by Stuart McDearman FARRAR
The Sweeney log home is located about 1 1/2 miles north of the Old Courthouse, on the west side of Rt. 24. The original building was a 2-story log cabin, one room up and one down, built about 1823 or 1824 by Charles A. Sweeny. It had a large stone chimney. A one room cabin near the house served as kitchen and servants quarters. Additional rooms were added later. This home later became the home of their son, Charles H. Sweeney and wife, Mattie Jane Bryant. In an upstairs room of the old part of the house, school was held and taught by Mrs. Sweeney.
Info from Sweeney Family Bible belonging to Mrs. James A. Sweeney (probably belonging to son Richard A. Sweeney now) Mr. Everett Sadler visited her in February 1984. The names are spelt as they were in the bible. Other info also available in library books at Morman Temple, 5600 Monument Ave, Richmond, VA.
