
Arkansas was one of the states of the Confederacy that was part of the Trans-Mississippi West. As such the people of Arkansas answered the call to arms early on. And many volunteer units were formed for short periods of time, and later disbanded after specific engagements were over. Many of those who served with these early units, re-enlisted in newly formed units, before the thought of conscription could be implimented. By the time it became necessary to impliment conscription to re-enforce the depleted forces, there were but farmers, businessmen, and young boys left.
Tennessee was deeply involved in the war between the states and as such most of my family on the SWAFFORD side served with the South. Many of them served with the Tulloss Rangers which were mobilized from the Sequatchie Valley, TN., which was commanded by Capt. John M. Bridgeman.
